We are happy to be staying in the same Hostal over Saturday and Sunday. We don't like walking on Sundays since we often find most services aren't open in the small towns.
We got up late and went sightseeing. This is Holy Week and the people of Leon celebrate it. We were amazed at the number of people out. It is interesting to see a community that is dominantly Roman Catholic emphasize Holy Week. Due to the diversity of religious thought and fragmentation of the Christian faith in the US, such a celebration by a US community wouldn't be possible. We went to an evening procession. We will attend a couple more before we depart Leon.
It also seemed odd, yet interesting, that a predominantly Catholic community would have a fountain themed with the Roman god Neptune. Tolerance or folly, who knows?
The following link will give you some info about Leon. Leon info
Vic and I both fell in love with Leon. The city has so much to offer and seems so busy and alive for such a small city. Vicky wishes there was a similar community in the US where everything was in walking distance, safe, and so vibrant. Most of the people are friendly, but our inability to speak Spanish precludes us from dialogue. It is truly our loss.
Cool pics. Glad u are getting some must needed rest. Keep safe. Love and miss u.
ReplyDeleteIt looks like a beautiful town and a lovely celebration, but admittedly the white masks are throwing me off a bit!
ReplyDeleteI' not sure why they wear masks. The do wear different colored masks at some of the processions. I will try to learn the purpose of the masks.
